Welcome to Lukhendro Keisham's Blog

Blessed are not the child with silver spoons but with the grace of making it better. Curse are not the one with half meal a day but with the disgrace of making it worse. Success and failure happens to both, we are all the same, only a different package we comes in.

My Manipur

Manipur

Manipur is among the Seven Sisters North-Eastern states under the Republic of India . It's meaning implies the Land of Jewels. Surrounded by high hills on all sides with a lone valley in the center makes up a bowl shape topography. Imphal the capital of Manipur lies in the central plain at a height of about 800 meters above sea level.

It is physically divided into the hills and the valleys. The hills are populated by many ethnic groups. The valley is populated mainly by the Meiteis, the Meitei Pangals (Muslims), the tribals and the immigrants from other parts of India.

Geographical Details:
Located in the extreme naoth eastern border oof India it is bounded on the north by Nagaland, south by Mayanmar and Mizoram, east by mayanmar and west by Assam.          Manipur is located in the Himalayan Region. The hills of Manipur are the southward extension of the Himalayas. The state is divided into the Central Plain and the Hills surrounding the Central Plain.

The Central Plain:
Imphal River flows through the middle of the Central Plain. So, the plain is also known as the Inphal Valley. The north south ectent of the valley is about 60 kms. and the east west extent is about 30 kms. Few isolated hills and ridges are also found in the valley. The valley slops from north to south so the rivers of the valley rise in the highlands of the north and flow towards the south. The Imphal vallay was formed by the filling up of an ancient lake. A part of the lake is still found in the southern part of the valley called the Loktak Lake. The central plain is very fertile and most of the people of Manipur live in the central plain since farming and transport of goods are much easier in the plain.
The Imphal river doesn't fall in loktak Lke but flows south wards and enters the Chin Hills of Mayanmar. It is also known as Manipur River (Turel Achouba). It falls into the Chinwin river of Mayanmar.

The Hills Surrouinding the Central Plain:
The hills of Manipur consists of parallel ranges and a series of valleys. They extand from the Naga Hills in the north up to the Chin and Mizo Hills in the south. The Imphal valley divides the hills into Eastern Hills and Western Hills which lies in the east and the west of th eImphal Valley respectively.

The Eastern Hills run along the boundary between Manipur and Mayanmar. The Chingai, the Mapithel, the Mulian, etc. are the important ranges of the Eastern Hills and some peaks are Kayangbubg (2,833 mts.), Shirui (2,568 mts.) and Kachaobung (2,498 mts.). The world famous Shirui Lily grows on the Shirui Hills in Ukhrul.
